India's employment challenge involves both insufficient creation of productive jobs and the poor quality of a large share of existing employment.

Rapid labour-force growth requires expansion of employment opportunities outside low-productivity agriculture. Manufacturing and modern services have not always absorbed workers at the scale required, producing unemployment or underemployment among sections of the workforce.

At the same time, employment alone does not guarantee economic security. A large proportion of workers remain in informal or self-employed activities characterised by low productivity, irregular earnings, weak contracts and limited social protection. Thus, a person may technically be employed while remaining economically vulnerable.

The two dimensions reinforce each other. Limited availability of productive formal jobs pushes workers towards low-quality employment, while low skills and weak firm productivity constrain movement towards better jobs.

Policy therefore needs to combine labour-intensive manufacturing and MSME growth with infrastructure, skill formation, improved female workforce participation and portable social security.

India's employment problem cannot be reduced to a simple unemployment rate. The larger developmental objective must be creation of sufficient numbers of productive, reasonably secure and progressively higher-paying jobs.

Higher agricultural productivity raises output per unit of land, but farm income depends on the value farmers finally realise after accounting for prices, costs and risks.

An increase in production can depress market prices when demand, storage or processing capacity does not expand proportionately. Rising expenditure on fertilisers, energy, machinery, labour or credit may also absorb productivity gains. Small and fragmented holdings limit economies of scale and weaken farmers' bargaining power.

Income is further affected by price volatility, post-harvest losses, inadequate storage, limited market access and dependence on intermediaries. Climatic shocks can increase both production risk and indebtedness.

Therefore, productivity enhancement must be accompanied by better value realisation. This requires efficient markets, farmer collectives, storage and logistics, food processing, crop diversification, risk management and improved access to technology and credit.

The policy objective should consequently shift from maximising physical output alone towards increasing sustainable net farm income. Productivity remains important, but its benefits reach farmers only when institutions connecting production to markets, prices and value addition also function effectively.

India's renewable-energy transition can strengthen energy security while creating new opportunities for economic development, but it also changes rather than eliminates strategic vulnerabilities.

Greater solar, wind and other non-fossil capacity can diversify the energy mix and reduce exposure to volatile imported fossil-fuel prices. Expansion of renewable infrastructure can stimulate investment, innovation, employment and domestic manufacturing in sectors such as solar modules, batteries, green hydrogen and grid technologies.

However, variable renewable generation requires stronger transmission networks, storage, flexible generation and improved distribution-sector management. Dependence on imported critical minerals, cells and specialised equipment can create new supply-chain vulnerabilities. Regions and workers dependent on coal also face adjustment costs.

Artificial intelligence can improve public-service delivery by helping governments process large datasets, automate routine tasks and identify patterns that are difficult to detect manually.

AI systems may assist disease surveillance, agricultural advisories, traffic management, fraud detection, translation across Indian languages and prioritisation of inspections or public resources. Automation can also reduce processing time and allow officials to focus on complex cases.

However, public decisions differ from ordinary commercial applications because they affect rights and entitlements. Biased or incomplete data can produce discriminatory outcomes.
